Character name: Yui Hirasawa
Age: 18
Canon: K-ON!
Canonpoint: The end of the animated series.
Background: Here's the wiki-page. Here's a page on her specifically.
Personality: The kanji used to spell Yui's name in Japanese, means "simply, or only" and there really is no other way to describe her. Yui is only ever herself, and frequently does things that make you think "Only she would do something like that."
Yui is a confident, lackadaisical young girl. She is accepting of her flaws and unashamed to honestly express her thoughts and feelings. She is lazy, and a bit of a ditz, but when asked about her hobbies doesn't struggle to sound self-important. She says honestly that her favorite things to do are "lay around and eat sweets." Her carefree attitude may make it seem like she doesn't care, but she does. She is an emotional girl who is easily moved to smile or cry, even for simple reasons and she cares greatly for the people in her life.
One of the first things people learn when meeting Yui is her love of food. She falls into the classic anime trope of being a big eater despite never gaining any weight, and her friends are often jealous of this fact. Yui loves food of all kinds, from sweet to savory. Even something simple, if well cooked, is enough to put her in a good mood. Despite this love of food Yui is too lazy to cook. She has trouble paying attention to the same thing for an extended period of time and is easily confused by complicated instructions. She usually gets bad grades because of her wandering attention, and lack of interest. Somehow though, when she applies herself she can achieve amazing results, such as getting 100% on a test she did so badly on the first time that she had to retake it!
Still, it isn't often that Yui is motivated to apply herself. Before Yui joined the Light Music Club her life was going nowhere and she knew it. Feeling as though she had frittered away her school life so far, upon entering high school she vowed to join a club and do something with her life. She isn't longing for friends. She also isn't really bothered by the fact that she hasn't really accomplished much in her life so far. She has a loving family, good friends, and good food. Until High School that's all she could really want or ask for, but she knows that there is a whole world out there filled with things she has yet to experience. She doesn't regret her inactivity, rather, she is finally ready to step outside her comfort zone and experience something new and exciting, even if it takes a little bit of effort on her part.
But a little bit of effort is her limit! Yui realizes someone so low-key like herself probably can't start with something too demanding right away. She wants to find a club that doesn't take a lot of hard work or take too much time and energy. When she sees the word "Light" in the name of her future club she assumes that means the club is easy. She remembers playing the castanets in grade school and being complimented by her teacher. That's when, with an entirely misplaced surge of confidence, Yui decides to join the Light Music Club. When Yui later realizes she will actually have to learn how to play an instrument she balks. However, after seeing the others perform she admits "they aren't very good, but it looks like they are having so much fun." and joins anyway.
Yui's lack of knowledge about instruments (for example, she is sure a guitar won't cost her anymore than $50.00) may be one of the key reasons she makes this decision. It's hard to talk her into doing something that sounds difficult, but if she's unaware of the difficulties involved is more willing to commit to something without complaint. She is the kind of person who is easily moved by their emotions and acts without really thinking things through. Her excitement at watching the others perform moves her to join the club and agree to learn the guitar, despite her lack of musical knowledge. However, once her heart is set on something it's also very difficult to talk her out of it. Throughout highschool Yui never once regrets her decision to learn to play the guitar. Even when her fingers hurt, or her hand cramps up, or she has to spend all her money on a guitar, she does so without a single complaint.
In fact, Yui is only happier from that point onwards as she grows to love playing the guitar and making music with her friends, with her sister remarking on more than one occasion that the Light Music Club has made Yui a happier more fulfilled person. Frequently people tell Yui that she acts like a little kid because of these traits. Not complaining when she doesn't realize others might think something is a challenge, or crying and smiling easily, saying things bluntly, these are all rather childish habits. Still, Yui doesn't mind and never considers changing her ways. Yui is only every Yui, the only one that can be. That's just who she is, and what others say about it doesn't bother her in the slightest. She is rarely intimidated by others or afraid to be herself.
Of course it's great to be so self confident, but this attitude can also be one of her greatest flaws. Aside from her general laziness, academic disinterest, and obsession with food, Yui is terrible at thinking of the consequences of her actions or of the effect her words and deeds may have on others. Since she herself is so hard to offend, she never worries about offending others. She doesn't care what opinion people have of her, and so sometimes acts in ways that embarrass her friends or offends others. She is 18, so she doesn't necessarily blurt out every thought that comes into her head, but she doesn't hesitate to act how she wants or tell people what she's really thinking either. This can sometimes leave others feeling upset.
Still, ultimately Yui is a fun-loving young girl who wants to lead a simple happy life. She loves her friends, and genuinely cares about almost everyone she meets. She has a unique sense of taste, but loves those things she considers "cute." She stops to pet every dog she meets and treats her guitar like her boyfriend! Most of all she loves music and playing with her friends. Carefree never described someone half as well.
Wish: When it comes time to make a wish, there isn't much Yui actually wants. In canon, whenever she makes a "wish" it is usually for delicious food, or to be able to keep playing music with her friends. Given her complete lack of forethought, I doubt she will realize that payment for this wish equates to a lifelong obligation to stay in Nyoi-cho. In addition, the thought of being a magical girl will likely excite her. Without realizing the gravity of the situation Yui makes an utterly frivolous wish.
"I want to eat wonderful food and play music with my friends forever!"
Nevermind that it's technically two things she's asking for. Yui's wish demonstrates a few things. First it demonstrates her lack of foresight, second her fun-loving nature. For these reasons her powers should be something short-lived, but also something fun and exciting. The other aspects of her wish, friends, music, and food should also be involved.
As for how her wish is granted, it depends on whether both are granted or not. One of her abilities involves creating delicious objects, so that is one way the first part of the wish can be granted. The other part of Yui's wish, "that she play music with her friends forever" is more complicated. Although she is sure this would make her friends happy as well, and would never make the wish if she thought any of her fellow club members wouldn't want to play with her, it still is a selfish wish made for the sake of her own happiness. I can't see this wish being granted with anything other than an eternal time-loop. Of course a clone of Yui is the one who will actually suffer these consequences.
Passive ability: Musical Compulsion - Whenever Yui plays music or sings, other's will feel compelled to do as she wants. This is based on the way her wish ends up "controlling" her friends into doing what she wants, playing music with her. Of course once she stops singing or playing the effect immediately stops. In addition, the compulsion is pretty easy to fight. Like with hypnosis, she won't be able to force anyone to do something they wouldn't do normally anyway. For example, if someone hated to play kick the can she wouldn't be able to convince them to play with her no matter how much she wanted to!
Active ability: Candy Creation - Yui has the ability to create objects out of candy and other sweet foods. She doesn't need to have candy on her to do this, simply willing for the object is enough to make it appear. The limit to what she can make is only her imagination, though of course bigger objects will hugely darken her soul gem. However, as the objects are made from candy, cake, and other delicious foods, they won't ever last for long. Her candy creations are far from sturdy, and even if they don't suffer any damage, begin to break down almost immediately. The things she creates are definitely one time use only sorts of things and can't be kept around for very long.
Weapon: A Gibson Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar in Heritage Cherry Sunburst. It looks the same as her guitar from home, but it won't be, and she will definitely notice. She's rather close to her guitar, so not having him around will upset her quite a bit.
